Libyan Embassy Protest - 13th March 2011

As I predicted in my last report, the placing of the flag pole from its original position to the top of the Embassy only made the Libyans who attend the protests even more determined to change it back from the "Gaddafi flag" to the flag of independence.

It was not long until I was informed that they were planning on climbing to the very top of the building and changing the flag. I crossed the road and stood there as the two brave individuals waited for the key moment to sprint to the building next to the Embassy (which was going through renovation and thus provides a relatively easy climb to the top) without being noticed by the police.

Out of the two who attempted to ascend the temporary walls surrounding the renovation site, only one was able to escape the police man's clasp. He quickly made his way to the top of the building and crossed over the to Embassy were he proceeded to take down the "Gaddafi flag" and hoist the Libyan flag of independence.

A group of protesters then ran across the road to show their support for him and to try and prevent the police from detaining the individual. They came to an agreement with the police that if captured, he would be released a few hours later.

It was towards the end of the protest that we got news of his capture and, as initially promised, the police stated that he would be released shortly.

In an attempt to get one back, an individual from the Embassy placed a green flag outside the window. This was met by angry chants from the protesters who made sure they let him know what they thought of him and the flag.
